One Small Step

Some people are afraid of change. Change can be intimidating and down right scary. Some people accept change with open arms, and absorb anything that may throw them off and adapt quickly. For some the adaptation happens in an instant, for others change has to happen over time.

Big changes in life happen and when you have no preparation it can get a little frightening. Even having preparation doesn’t always make it easier.

The past three weeks have been full of change for me. First I applied for a promotion that I wasn’t sure I would get but thought it was worth a shot. I interviewed and swore up and down it went horribly. Then a few days after the interview I was told that they could not choose a candidate at this time due to “unforeseen roadblocks”. A week went by and I got called into my supervisor’s office. I was nervous. I had no idea what this impromptu meeting was about but usually when you get called in it’s not the best of things. I sat down and my supervisor is grinning ear to ear. Something was up.

She told me my other supervisor was on speakerphone and after all of the pleasantries my curiosity was peaked. Finally they said they wanted to offer me the promotion. Much like I did when my fiancé proposed I asked if they were serious and I’m pretty sure I squealed out “REALLY?!” a few times too. They said I interviewed well and they thought I would be a good fit as a team lead. I was thrilled. But I had to keep my mouth shut until they made the announcement next Wednesday. It was Friday… I had a long weekend ahead of me. Luckily they told my leads (soon to be co-leads) right after they told me so I got to talk to them about it but other than that I had to keep things quiet.

The weekend went by and I was back to work on Monday business as usual. Wednesday the announcement was made and I would officially be starting as a team lead the following Monday.

The first week was pretty intense. I worked 2 different schedules, the early schedule Monday and Tuesday and the late schedule Wednesday through Friday. They wanted me to see what each lead did during their shift and what each shift was like. It was decided that I would be working the latest shift and would start that shift the next week.

I am in my second week of that shift now and I have to say it’s pretty nice. I have a 30 mile one way commute and going in at 10:30 am now there is not a lot of traffic to get through. I also get to spend more time with my fiancé who works the late shift at his job too. All in all it has been a good transition.

On top of my promotion I also started a 3 week clean eating and exercise program. I have to say I bit off a little more than I could chew but I did really well the first week, tapered off the second but am jumping back into it this week.

Lastly my fiancé and I have started house hunting. With our tax refunds this year and my promotion we’re hoping to have a down payment ready to go within the next few months. So we are spending our weekends looking at houses and neighborhoods and seeing what works for us. And of course we are constantly working on our wedding planning. There is always something to buy or something to make.

Clearly we both have a lot on our plates but we are chugging along and working through everything. There have been big changes for both of our lives lately and although we are still adapting and getting used to things I think this is going to be a good thing.

All forward steps are good steps even if they’re baby steps.
